I FOUND A WEB SITE ON THE INTERNET THAT PICTURES A PAIR THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE THESE AND THEY WERE IDENTIFIED AS BEAN/COBB. BEAN COBB HANDCUFFS WITH KEY & REMOVABLE LOCK

BEAN COBB

HANDCUFFS WITH KEY

These cuffs have the distinction of a removable/replaceable lock. The lock can only be removed when the cuff is in its primed state. The lock is primed by turning the key in the keyhole (the key is flat with two bits). Pressing the small actuator beside the keyhole engages the lock. When primed, the bow will swing in and out of the lock case. Once engaged, the bow will only ratchet in (4 positions).

Very Fine condition - eBay

These handcuffs sold for $102.52 (Plus $9 Shipping).

Normally I would discount the 'Salem Jail' part as a fake, but the seller in this case is a well-known member of the handcuff/lock community.

ANTIQUE HANDCUFFS- HISTORICAL LOT 2 - UNIQUE

This old set of handcuffs came from an estate sale. Stamp on cuffs is not completely legible. Stamp reads; Pat. July 4. The year is not legible, see photo. Cuffs have chips to silver coating on metal, no rust that I can see. There are no keys with this set. What stories might these cuffs have locked in them! Please email with any questions. Thanks for looking.

On Jan-12-09 at 17:51:39 PST, seller added the following information: I have added this additional photo to show the one cuff up closer. I am not a collector of handcuffs and cannot say why this cuff has extra metal on it. The cuffs are solid and intact. Please email if you have any questions. - eBay (Link lost)

These handcuffs sold for $144.97 (Plus $8.12 Shipping).

Antique Bean/Cobb Handcuffs Circa 1899

Offering for auction an Antique Pair of Iron Handcuffs. In 1899 Lyman H. Cobb patented a radically different variation of the Bean Handcuff. They retained certain features from the earlier style Bean Handcuffs, most notably the lock retarding feature that allowed the cuff to be carried closed but unlocked(a feature not seen on any handcuff prior to the Bean handcuff). They Became known as the improved Bean's pattern handcuff because they overcame some of the defects of the older style Bean Handcuffs. By 1899 standards they were light weight weighing only 12oz. They were finely finished and could be unlocked from either side of the lock case. The locking mechanism was removable when the cuff was open so that the lock could be repaired easily. However if the cuff was closed the lock could not be removed and the cuff could not open by accident or without the key. Today they are referred to as Bean/Cobb handcuffs.

This is a real nice pair of handcuffs! They are approximately 10" long and in very good condition! They show some wear via surface blemishes but are not corroded, rotted, or broken(as the photos will show). I have unlocked them, cleaned the locking mechanisms and tested thier operation. During testing these cuffs operated as they were designed to, using the original key that I have in my personal collection. There is no key included in this sale. - eBay (Link lost)

These handcuffs had a 'But-it-Now' price of $185 (Plus $9 Shipping). It had two 'best offers' subnitted but failed to sell.

This antique pair of handcuffs are made by Bean and nicely marked with the PAT'D NOV 28 82 NOV 18 84 around one of the clevis's. The dates show very well as my picture does not do it justice. They are in fantastic condition with 98 % of the plating intact. The key is not original but works the cuffs fine with no trouble. The key opens the cuffs and to lock them you push the button on the side of each cuff and it snaps the lock in place. They function perfect and are just a nice honest pair of old west handcuffs. Thanks! - eBay

Marked THE MALTBY on one cuff and MANUFACTURED BY THE MATTATUCK M'F'G. CO. WATERBURY, CONN. U.S.A. This company was founded on October 15, 1896. Louis F. Maltby, a blacksmith, was given a patent in November 12, 1901. There is no patent date imprinted on these manacles. As well this pair uses a round key of which there is none...where is Houdini's key chain when you most need it! This first design is unique in that it has a trigger mechanism on the inside of the cuffs that causes the shackle to snap shut when a wrist is placed inside as it touches the trigger. This company produced Maltby's first, then Judd's and then finally Mattatucks. - eBay
