STORY PADLOCK & WITH ORIGENAL KEY (JOHN CHINAMAN) NO.1785 PAT. 1818

Here is an example of one of the more rare story padlocks.

Don't miss this one, any serious collector knows how rare this lock is. This would make a great Christmas gift for any lock collector. You don't fine them with the original key or in this condition.. This lock is in such great condition no crack or broken parts no etching or pitting, it is very well detailed. I looked on the net, the ones I seen are not as nice as this one and sold for $600.00 and up, one I think it said sold in Main for $4000.00.

The lock features Chinamn on front and legs with dog bitting ankle and whisky bottle in back pocket, on the reverse side it also shows a patent date 1818 that's what it looks like to me. This lock was listed in the Trenton Lock and Hardware Co. 1880 catalog, as No. 1785 ( John Chinaman ) it was next to No. 1787 ( Great Western ) also known as the Werewolf lock.

Lock measures 4" x 2 1/2" inches

Hello. Your lock is not from 1818, but rather from 1878. It was patented by John Gerard for the Trenton Lock & Hardware Co. There are 2 patents for this lock, both filed on Oct. 11 1878. The patent #s are USD10913 (this has to do with the raised edges) and USD10877 (this has to do with the face) Patented in 1878, this humorously designed No. 1785 padlock is called "John Chinaman" and as the period's racially insensitive legend has it, a Chinese fellow was attempting to steal a flask of whiskey through a window. The Diana - Story Padlock

Story padloacks are facinating. It allows someone to narrow down their collecting to a very small, and extremely rare, collection with known limits. Unfortunately, it can also be a frustrating experience as it might be years before the padlock you are searching for comes up for auction, and there will be others competing for it.

Ornate German Push Key Story Padlock

Here is an interesting padlock. While it is described as a story lock, it is not one that is consider a true story padlock by the Arnall PADLOCK COLLECTOR guide. At any rate, it is a nice padlock. Be nice to know more about it.

This is the only one of these I have ever seen. It is a push key mechanism with the keyhole on the side. It is in near Mint condition. 2 5/8" tall. Steel. No key. - eBay (7 Nov 2011)

Miniature Horseshoe Dog Collar Padlock

I was really surprised to come across this small horseshoe padlock because I was aware of the large one and the smaller one (which is the largest one on the photo below). And interestingly enough, there is an even smaller one.

Here is a neat miniature antique dog collar padlock. It measures 1 inch long, 3/4 across, and 3/16 inch thick. It is a working padlock, though I have no key. It is a very rare and hard to find miniature padlock dating to the late 19th century. Though the hasp is worn There are some letters and numbers present as seen in photos. This was made by the BARNES MFG CO and was patented in 1879. The last two photos showing three locks are to show you the others currently listed in seperate auctions. This auction is only for the tiny 1 inch horseshoe lock. I will consider fair and reasonable offers. - eBay (26 March 2011)

Cherub / Cupid story padlock

Here is another story lock example:

I am no expert on story locks but I think this is a rare and very collectable one. Russell and Erwin produced several slightly different Cherub/Cupid story locks – some with USA stamped on them, slight variations in leaf pattern and so on. I think all are covered under the Henry E. Russell Jr. Design Patent D11308 from 1879. I have not found a picture of this exact one though collectors of this style of lock will know much more than me about it. It is 2 inches wide and a little over 2.5 inches tall with the R&E Co. trademark at the 6 o’clock position on the reverse of the lock. There is a R and E key with it. The lock is working and is in good condition. - eBay (18 Oct 2009)

Cast Iron Story padLock,Civil War Canteen,US

These do not come up for auction very often!

This is a very hard to find lock. It is considered a Story lock because of it's figural shape in the form of a civil war canteen. There are two types of this lock, and this is the one that is harder to find. The U.S. is right side up to the lock, but upside down to the canteen on this one. On the other the U.S. is opposite. There are no chips, cracks, or breaks in this beauty. The key is not original, but works the lock well, and the shackle spring is good. The lock measures 3-1/8" X 1-3/4".
