Tower Double Lock Leg Irons

Tower Double Lock Leg Irons. These are my great grandfathers. Issued to him in the 1920's when he worked at the Leavenworth Ks. Penitentiary. In the first picture you can see the right leg iron is open and the left is not. It is hard to open but with a little TLC and oil it will work just fine. They have a little rust on them from all the years. The key is the original key that came with the irons. There is NO serial number on them. All that is stamped on the leg irons is TOWER DOUBLE LOCK by the hinge on the left one in picture #1. They have been in the family from day one of there use and i wish i could tell you a story of who and how many they have been on, but i cant. I just know they are original. - eBay (06 Feb 09)

This set of leg irons sold for $86 (Plus $20 Shipping).

Balco Leg Irons

Balco leg irons

Tower Double Lock Leg Iron

There is a Tower Leg Iron, a larger version of the handcuff. Tower double lock leg irons seem to have lasted in popularity longer than the Tower handcuffs, perhaps because there were no early Peerless leg irons. Indeed Tower leg irons were also made in the 1920s by a company named Balco. They were very similar to the originals, but featured perfectly round rings instead of the bent rings used by Tower.

This set of leg irons come with one key. The shackles are fully operational and in very good shape. There are thirteen links in the connector chain. - eBay (3 Feb 09)

This set of leg irons sold for $129.01 (Plus $10 Shipping).

ANTQ.TOWER DOUBLE LOCK? LEG IRONS,CHEROKEE BILL HISTORY

ANTIQUE US MARSHAL'S LEG IRONS.AUTHANTIC.1880’s,WITH PATTEN DATES & HISTORY. USED ON CHEROKEE BILL WHO WAS HUNG BY THE FAMOUS HANGING JUDGE ISAAC PARKER IN FT. SMITH ARK. USA.
.....ASK YOUR QUESTIONS NOW, NOT LATER…..

*******************TOWER DOUBLE LOCK LEG IRONS*******************

I have for your consideration these nice authentic US Deputy Marshal's Leg Irons from the middle 1880's. I’m selling these for the grandson of US Deputy Marshal JOHN F. LONG who was a deputy marshal in the Oklahoma territory in the 1880's & 1890's. The following is the story of these old leg irons.

In 1888, at the age of 12, a man named Crawford Goldsby, AKA Cherokee Bill, shot and killed his first man; his brother in law. Due to his age, he was not prosecuted. By the time he was 18, he fell in with outlaws William & James Cook. In 1894, while riding with the Cook brothers, he shot and killed Deputy Sequoya Houston neat Tahlequah Oklahoma, which was in Indian Territory.

Sometime later, Ike Rogers and a neighbor, Clifton Scales asked Marshal Long to let them borrow his leg irons. While Cherokee Bill was visiting his girlfriend, the two men jumped him while he was sleeping. They tied him up, and put these leg irons on him and took him to jail at Fort Smith Arkansas, where he was later tried for murder by the famous "HANGING JUDGE" ISAAC CHARLES PARKER. Cherokee Bill was hanged in Fort Smith Ark. In March, 1896.. Before he was hung, he was asked if he had anything to say. He said...."HELL NO. I CAME HERE TO DIE, NOT TO MAKE A SPEECH". A few moments later, he was dead.

One of the shackles is locked, and the other is not...THERE IS NO KEY.....I feel sure the lucky bidder could find a key that would fit if wanted.

There are 5 partial patent dates that can seen. They are MAY 26, 185X, SEPT 4, 185X, MAR 5, 187X, DEC 16, 187X, & DEC 6..I can’t tell for sure what that last year is. I think it may be 188X, but all the patent years are in the 1850's,-1870's.

This is a true piece of American History from the Old West. You may never get a chance for a piece of history like this again. This is one item you definitely don’t want to let get away. - eBay (2 Feb 09)

This set of leg irons sold for $154 (Plus $15.50 Shipping).

Antique Metal Padlock with Child and Dove Design

Apparently old and Rare. Nice too!

Antique Metal Padlock
- with Child and Dove Design -

What a unique and rare find for collectors and decorators!

This antique padlock features a design on both sides. We believe this is made of either iron or cast iron. On one side is a child sitting in a tree or some kind of limb or stalk with a dove. The other side continues the theme with the same plant and dove. The only inscription on the lock is "U S A".

It looks like the other side contains some initial or logo, but we can't make it out.

There are no keys with this lock. This lock measures approximately 2 3/4 inches from the bottom to the top of the loop, the base is a circle approximately a 2 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. - eBay (22 Feb 09)

This padlock sold for $878 (Plus $4.95 Shipping).

Longest measurement to the top of the hook clasp is about 1". Professionaly made. Possibly by an apprentice. No maker's mark. Some wear to the coins but this is as expected.
