PRISON SHACKLES - LEG & WRIST IRONS - 19TH CENTURY

What an interesting set of shackles. I'm not surprised that these went for the final price.

This auction is for a superb original antique set of shackles. These are made of very heavy metal (iron) and consist of a pair of handcuffs (for the wrists) and a pair of legcuffs with a joining metal chain (there is no lock or padlock with this set). These shackles date to the late 19th. century or early 1900's and according to the previous owner these came from a prison here in the Netherlands. These shackles are not marked and they are in superb condition. There is wear from age and use as you'd expect (see pictures) but no repairs or damage. The cuffs lock beautifully and fit well around an adult man's wrists and leggs. The inside space (opening) of the wrist cuffs measure 2-3/4" long (7 cm), a fraction under 2-1/8" wide (5,3 cm) and 1-1/2" deep (3,7 cm). The leg irons (the space measured on the inside) measure 3-1/2"across (9 cm) and 1-7/8" deep (4,7 cm). These are genuine antique shackles and cuffs, made from hand wrought iron. They are very heavy and superb quality, wonderful smooth and tight mechanisms with the original chain. The chain is not very long, so I'm not sure whether the chain would have been used just to tie the legcuffs, and then the handcuffs may have been tied together directly with a padlock or had their own chain originally. Or of course the chain could have gone through all the cuffs tying the prisoner's feet and hands close together. The chain measures 23-1/4" long (59 cm). The chain links are approx. 2" long and 5/8" wide. - eBay ()
This set of shackles had a high bid of $1,515 (Plus Free Shipping).

LILLY IRONS - 1920's 'REISSUE'

I have been looking for a real set of Lilly Irons for a while now. If this is what a fake set is worth I don't see purchasing a real set anytime soon.

This listing is for EXTREMELY RARE LILLY IRONS BAR HANDCUFFS WITH KEY

The famous bar handcuffs invented during the Civil War by Sgt. Lilly. These handcuffs gained notoriety when they were used on the conspirators in the assassination of President Lincoln.

They were worn throughout the conspirators' trial. Obviously, it is rather torturous to wear them for any period of time.

This Lilly Irons is a reissue from the 1920's/1930's, comes with the original square bar tightening key.

Excellent condition - eBay

This set of irons had a Buy-it-Now price of $750 (Plus $15 Shipping). I has been listed for a while, so far with no takers.

Stainless Steel Round Key Collar - Restraint Prototype

Another nice prototype collar.

Stainless Steel Round Key Collar - Restraint

This is a serious, rigid three hinge, 1 & 3/4 inch tall locking collar! The tightest locking hole is about 14 inches around and the threaded holes are about 1/2 inches apart, so the range is up to about 14 and 1/2 inches in circumference unless you are willing to lose the leash ring then you could use the last hole for a maximum of 14 & 3/4 inches around.

The lock is really special! A round screw lock that fits to the straight edge of the collar end. It threads in with the key into one of the threaded holes. There is no way to back the lock out if you don't have the key. Almost impossible to pick and the high strength stainless steel metal is very hard to cut, especially if there is little room between the collar and neck to fit a tool, and don't even think about cutting torches...

Created by a world class restraint artist located in Australia. Those in the know may know his work. For everyone else just know that this guy really knows his art. This design is based on an antique pattern developed in the 1800's for wrist and ankle restraints. He expanded the idea for modern materials and laser cutting machines and came up with a prototype collar.

This is a truly one of a kind item. Depending on how this auction does it might be the only one ever made. If the auction does well we will commission more of these for our web store on our web sight. If the bids are low, well we hope you value the very rare collectable you will end up with on this true, no reserve auction! - eBay (17 Aug 2009)

This custom collar had a high bid of $58.89 (Plus Free Shipping).

Stainless Steel Hasp Collar Restraint - Rare Prototype

This is very industrial and intimidating-looking. Nice construction.

Stainless Steel Hasp Collar - Restraints

This is a serious, rigid three hinge, 1 & 3/4 inch tall locking collar! The tightest slot is about 15 inches around and the slots are about 1/2 inches apart, so the range is up to about 15 and 3/4 inches in circumference.

Houdini Famous Spanish Torture Manacle Handcuffs

A replica, but a nice one nonetheless:

Spanish Torture Manacle Handcuffs
As seen in Houdini book-handcuff secrets
*a secret built in escape design

Up for auction is an almost exact reproduction of the Spanish Torture Manacles as seen in the Book Handcuff Secrets by Harry Houdini.

These were crafted by the World's leading maker of reproduction handcuffs and original escape apparatus, Ian McColl of Australia several years ago.

These are great for escape. They can be examined minutely, THERE IS NOTHING TO FIND! and when locked on your wrists escape is made very easily visually or, invisible.

Historians do not know for sure if this is Houdini's original escape idea or not but, its great!

They are in excellent cond, everything works perfectly
They do come with a key - eBay (22 April 09)

This set of handcuffs sold for $147.50 (Plus $9.95 Shipping).

Very Rare - Elias Richard Handcuffs

There are a couple types of handcuffs that seem to only come up for auction about once a year. Here is one of those times:

Extremely rare Elias Richards handcuff. The first known handcuff to be produced in the United States. For history buffs, the Elias Richards handcuff was said to have been used on John Brown in 1859 on his way to his execution. These cuffs are in wonderful working condition. There is light rust on them that makes them look their age. There is an ever so slight twist in the key. On each of the bows on the hinge side is ER 161. No reserve. - eBay (11 April 09)

This set of rare handcuffs sold for $6,101 (Plus $5.70 Shipping). That might be a high price for a handcuff auction for this year on eBay, barring any surprise listings. At any rate, it will be one of the highest for the year.

Here are a couple of photos the buyer, The Lars Holst Restraint Collection, sent to me for sharing. they are in great shape, considering how old they are:

Thanks much to Lars for the photos!

Finnish Kakola Handcuffs

These are very rare handcuffs indeed, made in a Finnish prison, you can imagine that there are not many laying around:

Here is a picture of the locking mechanism:

One or the rarer versions of the Kakola handcuffs went up for auction in 2008. It went for $5,432! (Not that your set would go for that much. There are many factors that determine the price.)

Images thoughtfully provided by Lars Holst who has one of the world's rarest (and coolest) handcuff collections. See his site at The Lars Holst Restraint Collection for more handcuff and other restraint photos.

Feel free to email me if you have and Kakola handcuff photos that you would like to share!
