Giant Antique Padlock - 1800s - Iron - Biggest Star

Here is a very impressive padlock:

This Iron Giant is a genuine antique museum Piece.Complete with the original key,it is the largest Iron Star made by Star lock works. And Star went out of business in 1927.The monster shackle is 5/8 inches thick.Far too big to be useful in most all normal applications. And made more than a century ago,it could even reach back as far as the civil war era. This was in a day where people didn't lock their front doors at night. At 4 3/4 inches tall and over 3 inches wide,There were a limited number of uses for it.Possibly a prison lock it would have to be used indoors or it would turn into a giant hunk of rust if used out in the weather. This piece still works well with it's genuine original key.I bought this at a lock show 20 years ago and it is one of the oldest and finest pieces in my collection. You could call this Old High Security and you would be accurate as this padlock is 2 1/4 inches thick with a large embossed star circling the keyhole. - eBay (5 March 2010)

This padlock had a high bid of $195 (Plus $11.50 Shipping).

I recently started studying locksmithing and a friend wanted me to check out this lock for him. This is the first place on the web that I could find this info. My friends lock has both ends of the shackle part at equal lengths and both sides are notched for extra security. It truly is an Iron Giant. The casing wall looks to be 1/4-1/3 inch thick and the key has a number on it. Probably military cell block or equipment storage..

Just purchased a star lock with the same dimensions. It's a little over 4 1/2" tall and 3" wide. I do not have the key. Very nice lock.
