PRISON LEG IRON

Here is a neat leg shackle. Looks like it was for securing a person to a fixed object. Then again, this can be something that has nothing to do with being a leg shackle. But as you can see, there is a notch so that the chain would not chafe against the leg, so it was made to lock around something.

You are looking at a Leg Iron that has been Used. This Leg Iron looks as if it has been around for a long time. The item is 33" long and the chain is 26" long, the ring is 3 1/8" round, the shackle has a 2 3/4" opening, and the chain is 5 /16" thick. This appears to have a chain that would go through the iron ring and the leg iron on the ankle as seen in the old chain gangs. It weighs 3 3/4 lbs. US government postal post office MAIL BOX padlock

I am not sure what this is worth given that I have not seen another one. It is just that nobody thought it was worth the selling price. Then again, you only need to find one buyer.

ROMER & CO. LEG IRONS MFG. FOR J. J. WALTON

I am still looking for my first set of authentic Romer cuffs or leg irons. Sadly this is not it either. A nice set anyway.

You are bidding on a set of very old Leg Irons or shackles made by Romer and Co. from Newark, NJ. The leg irons have 2 stamps on each. The first stamp shows Romer and Co. from Newark, NJ as the manufacturer and a patent date of April 27,1880. The second stamp shows Manufactured for J.J. Walton NY. From our research the leg irons date back to the late 1800's and are very RARE.

Weight - 1 lb. 13 oz.
Sizes - 4 1/2 " in width x 28 1/4" in length with 18 links
Metal - Steel with a very nice patina

There is no key for these leg irons as it was lost. If you want I am sure someone has one or a key could be made. I do not see any rust and locking system is very tight.

These handcuffs don't come around very often. I have yet to get a set for my collection. Then again, these seems to lack the form and style of other classic restraints.

I tend to collect restraints that are a little more modern than these. But that does not mean that these are not interesting. But sometimes you just need to draw the line somewhere.

Hand Made Antique Leg IronsShackles - 1800 Finland

Here is a nice old set of leg irons from Finland.

These shackles are the real thing. They come from my Father’s estate. His notes say Finland, 1800. I sent photos to serious collector who also sells this type of item. He spent a number of years in Finland. He said they are hand made iron shackles as well as confirming the date/period. The chain measures 43 inches long. The chain links are 3 inches long and one inch wide. The cuffs are approximately 1 3/4 inches wide and 3/8 inch thick. The diameter is 3 6/8’s inches. On one side of each cuff near the hinge, there is some impairment due to use. I think not unusual considering they are over 200 years old. They are not broken. The weight is approximately 14 pounds.

It is one thing to watch an old movie and see a chain gang. It is quite another experience to hold these extremely heavy old shackles in my hands and wish they could speak. I am holding a piece of history. - eBay (8 August 2010)
