This lock is just too cool. Still, I am shocked for the amount that it went for. This is not the first time one went for close to $2,000. So there seems to be a consensus that they are rare.
ORIGINAL ANTIQUE LARGE IRON PADLOCK COLTON'S PATENT JAN 6,1844. Bought from local estate. Approx 4.5" high and 3" wide, nearly 1" thick. Brass plate reads Colton's patent Jan 6, 1844 / 11. Has unusual original brass key - key turns in lock but it does not open, good condition! Guaranteed original! - eBay (5 Dec 2010)This padlock had a high bid of $1,703 (Plus $6 Shipping).
