Brass Combination lock - G.W. Grove 1878

Well, this is an amazing combination padlock. Certainly a rare animal, so rare that it sold for $5,000. An amazing padlock indeed!

Up for auction is this great old brass combination lock. The top is marked " G.W. Grove PAT April 2 1878". The 3 disks are each marked with letters A - P in the alphabet and turn fairly smooth, However there are a few stiff spots. It is about 3.5" tall and 2.5 wide, not including the piece that stick out of the left side. It is roughly 3/7" thick at the center. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE COMBINATION IS, but there are well over 4,000 possible combinations.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Sep-25-12 at 18:15:22 PDT, seller added the following information:
ETA - This lock is in Excellent overall condition considering the age and has no major dents or dings of any kind. When i hold this lock in my hand and shake it, The only part that has any kind of rattle is the little tap on the left side. It is not damaged in any way and I believe that this part had the same about of movement the day it was made. None of the internal parts rattle. - eBay (2 October 2012)
This padlock had a high bid of $5,108.88 (Plus 5 Shipping).

Pretty vintage, I guess. And it has an astounding price tag of $5,000! Wonder how to unlock this one. The combination will be very hard to find out. Nonetheless, thanks for the new info! Cheers.
