Marlin Fire Arms Co. 1st. Model handcuffs

Bottleneck handcuffs are great. I have still to find the right set for me. This pair is in great condition:

Up for auction is this exquisite pair of First Model MARLIN handcuffs in impeccable condition. The cuffs have their original bright nickel finish, and would be considered in fine condition, and are accompanied by an original Marlin handcuff key! Each lock case is marked as follows; MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. USA. . This first model is distinguishable by the bulbous lock case.

There are a few very minute areas that have a spot of darkness or discoloration. I have done my best to photograph these areas. Please keep in mind that some of the images were taken with a Super Macro lens, and these pictures appear more dramatic than to the naked eye. The cuffs were very hard to photograph because of the bright nickel is highly reflective.

The cuffs are very clean, and do not have any grim or dirt in the locks, hinges, or ratchet groves.

This is a VERY RARE opportunity for someone to acquire this very desirable pair of Marlin Fire Arms Co. handcuffs in high end collector condition. In 30 years of collecting, this is only the second pair in this condition I have seen! - eBay

and:

Question & Answer
Q: Would you mind telling me what you mean by these being first models by the bulbous lock case, exactly what is that or what do you mean? Both first and second models look similar. Both obviously have the bottle neck looking locks. I know the first models have three chain links instead of the barrel link of the second models and the bottle neck part is a little larger then the second models of 1910 or so. Thanks, Mike Jan-16-09

A: Hello Mike. The lock case is the bottle shape portion. The three rings are not a definitive way to determine the difference between a first and second model. I have had several second model Marlins with the smaller lock case or bottleneck. All first model Marlins did have a larger diameter (bulbous) lock case or bottleneck that the hasp is secured by. Hope this helps, Shawn

This set had a high bid of $577.76 (Plus $10.50 Shipping) but failed to go above the reserve price.

MARLIN FIREARMS SWIVEL BOTTLENECK HANDCUFFS

A second set of Marlin Bottleneck handcuffs sold recently.

Offered for sale today are a pair antique handcuffs manufactured by the Marlin Firearms Company, New Haven, Connecticut.

These magnificent and extremely rare handcuffs were manufactured by the Marlin Firearms Company which were patented by Robert H. Daley.

The handcuffs feature a double ratchet system that was very difficult to open without the key. They are fully functional and include the original key.

These handcuffs were by lawmen in the late 1890's through the early 1910's. They show the marks of honest use and the effects of an unknown number of arrests.

The handcuffs are steel with nickel plating. About 80% to 85% of the original finish is left (which is very rare to find). The surface finish has been left in it's original state (rather than buffed off) in order to maintain its character and collectible value. - eBay
This pair sold for $381.50 (Plus $15 shipping) That is much more than the last pair profiled here which went for $300. Then again it appears to be in much better condition.

CAVENEY BOTTLE NECK HANDCUFFS

Here is another variation of the Bottleneck handcuffs made by another manufacturer:

Authentic Caveney bottle neck handcuff with original key. Very good condition in working order.

These cuffs have been in the family for around 50 to 60 years and belonged to my Father-in-law. The pictures have been examined by experts who found them to be in nice condition and believe the key to be original. Please contact me if your an expert and find any error in my description. The photos very accurately show the condition of the cuffs. There the some pitting and light rust typical of items of this age and clearly visible in the photos. Patented Feb. 8, 1910.

Inscribed around the key hole: CAVENEY INVENTION Co. PATS.PENDING OAKLAND,CAL.FEB.8,10. - eBay

This great looking set of handcuffs went for $411 (Plus $10 shipping.)

MARLIN DALEY SWIVEL BOTTLENECK HANDCUFFS

Here is a somewhat rare type of antique handcuffs. Clearly you can see why they are nicknamed 'bottleneck' handcuffs.

These magnificent, extremely rare handcuffs were manufactured by the Marlin Firearms Co. under a patent by Robert H. Daley. They feature a double ratchet system that was very difficult to open without the key. They were owned & used by my Great Grandfather from sometime in the 1890's through about 1910 when he was a Deputy U.S. Marshal and later a Sheriff in Missouri. These handcuffs show the marks of honest use & the effects of an unknown number of arrests. They are steel and were originally nickel plated. - eBay
This pair sold for $300 (plus $14.35 in shipping)

I am not sure I would have sold my great grandfather's handcuffs then again $300 is lots of money.
