US Treasury Lock - Heavy Brass Clarke Combo Padlock

One of my favorite styles of combination padlocks. Rare and yet still affordable for those willing to save for a while. This one for some reason was a little more expensive than average. Perhaps it is indicative of increased demand.

This beautiful brass government seal lock was made for use by the U.S. Treasury Dept., by Clarke Combination Lock Co. in Baltimore, MD. Original pat. date of 1873 and reissued in Feb. of 1876. Over 138 years ago! It is in wonderful condition for its age and works great. There are some older small tool marks on the back plate, which closes tight and still has the retaining spring clip behind it. Some newer tool marks on the knurled turn ring and the loss of some chrome. Beautiful patina and a smooth working, great feeling lock. Very collectible! - eBay (24 Oct 2014)

This padlock had a high bid of $799 (Plus Free Shipping).

1873 - 1876 PATENT CLARKE COMBINATION LOCK BALTIMORE MD.

Here is a neat example of a Clarke combination padlock. It is interesting to see that the lock has been used so much that you can see wear around the correct buttons to press. No matter, the new owner can always change the combination by opening the back and moving the pins around.

CLARK COMBINATION LOCK BALTIMORE MD.

These are great combination padlocks. They are large and heavy. They are intricately made. The combinations can be changed, as long as you have the current combination or the lock is currently unlocked.

This one is also in pretty good cindition. I can only guess that this is why the lock went for more than average.

Small Clarke Combination Brass Padlock

This is a nice example of an intricate combination padlock. Actually, these are very cool. I have one but I do not have the cover for it.

This is a very old brass padlock that was manufactured by the Clarke Lock Co. Philadelphia. The padlock measures about 2 1/4" in width, 3 5/16" in length and about 1 3/8" in thickness. You can see the Pat'd date on the back is Feb. 4, 1873 Revised Feb. 29 1876. You can see all 12 tumblers are intact and the front cover with the chain link is also intact. I do not know the combination. I would say the overall condition is good for the age but it has been used as you can see from the pictures. Had trouble getting a good picture of the date on the back of the padlock. Buyer pays shipping charges . - eBay (6 Nov 2012)
This padlock had a high bid of $1,264 (Plus $8.75 Shipping).

1876 brass CLARKE COMBINATION LOCK CO

Here is a recent auction of this popular and large combination padlock. I think this one was a bit pricy given that the combination is not known. Then again, if you do not have one, who knows when your next chance might be...

Up for auction this evening is an estate fresh Antique 1876 brass CLARKE COMBINATION LOCK CO. combo pad lock. The mechanism on the door works great, I do not have the combo but all the buttons push down and when pulled up the all come up, I see no reason why it would not work if you could figure out the combo. It measures 4 inches tall and 2 1/4 inches across, great piece!! Condition is as you see it, Enlarge the photos and zoom in for a closer look and judge for yourself the condition. Clarke Combination Lock - "Navy Ordnance"

The interesting thing about this Clarke Combination Padlock is the Navy marking.
