COLTON'S PATENT JAN 6,1844 PADLOCK

This lock is just too cool. Still, I am shocked for the amount that it went for. This is not the first time one went for close to $2,000. So there seems to be a consensus that they are rare.

Has unusual original brass key - key turns in lock but it does not open, good condition! Guaranteed original! - eBay (5 Dec 2010)

Colton's Solid Brass 1844 Padlock

Here is an interesting antique padlock. I wonder why it did not sell?

For bid is an antique Colton's Solid Brass Padlock. This lock is an original, stamped on the front of the lock- reading left to right: "Colton's Patent Jan. 6. 1844" It measures 4 1/2" h x 3" w x 7/8" thick and weights apr. 1 lb. This lock comes with a Solid Brass key that measures 3 3/4" long.

Due to recent research I've found an old advertisement about Colton's locks. "COLTON'S Patent Safety, Door and Padlocks, on an entirely new principle, simple in it's construction, and are believed to be safest Lock in use. Especially adapted for Banks, Fire proof and Store doors. Manufactured by Colton's, Brown & Co, No. 2, North Seventh street, East Side, Philadelphia."

* Found in "The Coal Regions of Pennsylvania, being a, General Geological, Historical & Statistical review of the Anthracite Coal Districts" By Eli Bowen.

*Note: I was not able to open this lock. A locksmith or someone with mechanical skills maybe able to. Although this is - at this point- unable to be opened, this is still a fabulous piece of antiquity and has a great deal of history behind it, and it should be treasured. - eBay (10 Aug 2009)

This padlock had an opening bid of $99 (Plus $10 Shipping) but either attracted no bids or the auction was ended early.
