SMOKEHOUSE Padlock

As the seller noted, this padlock is in mint condition. So I am very pleased to have been the winner of this auction.

"MINT CONDITION" ANTIQUE SMOKEHOUSE Padlock with original key This Padlock is very unique in the way the key is used to open this lock. When you insert the key into the keyhold and turn the key, the key will then drop down to a second position which then requires you to again turn the key. When this sequence is followed the lock will open very easily. You are bidding on a very unusual Antique Smokehouse Padlock with the Original Key. This old antique padlock was found by my husband in an old steamer trunk that was locked and without a key from an antique shop. When my husband made a key for the old trunk and opened it the trunk was full of old clothes. Wrapped up in one of these articles of clothing was this Antique Smokehouse padlock and key. The lock is made of metal and brass while the key is metal. This lock is in MINT condition with NO RUST, CHIPS or DINGS. The key area on the lock (both front and back) are brass. On the front, sides and hasp of this lock are no markings. In the center of the front is a raised brass circle which forms a very unique key hole shape. On the back of this lock is again no markings except for a small brass circle which contains a very unusual shape or design engraved into it with the letter "C". The key also has no markings but the end of the key is slightly curved with one side going up and the other going down. This lock is in MINT condition and all working parts operate very smoothy. This lock is unknown as to origin except that it is very old judging by the clothing and again because of the way it way stored it is in MINT CONDITION. This lock measures 3 1/4" tall x 2 1/4" across and is 3/4" thick. The key measures 1 3/4" in length. The padlock with keys weights 5.6 ounces. Question & Answer: Q: Just a bit of information regarding this padlock. The design of letters on the back stand for Sargent & Co. This company has been in business since 1864. This padlock was made in the early days, probably from 1864 to the late 1890's. This padlock may be the finest example known to exist. Feb-19-11 A: Thank you so much for this information as I will post this to the listing also so that others can see it. Again, Thank You so very much. - eBay (20 Feb 2011)

This padlock had a high bid of $50 (Plus $8 Shipping).

Giant Antique Padlock - 1800s - Iron - Biggest Star

Here is a very impressive padlock:

This Iron Giant is a genuine antique museum Piece.Complete with the original key,it is the largest Iron Star made by Star lock works. And Star went out of business in 1927.The monster shackle is 5/8 inches thick.Far too big to be useful in most all normal applications. And made more than a century ago,it could even reach back as far as the civil war era. This was in a day where people didn't lock their front doors at night. At 4 3/4 inches tall and over 3 inches wide,There were a limited number of uses for it.Possibly a prison lock it would have to be used indoors or it would turn into a giant hunk of rust if used out in the weather. This piece still works well with it's genuine original key.I bought this at a lock show 20 years ago and it is one of the oldest and finest pieces in my collection. You could call this Old High Security and you would be accurate as this padlock is 2 1/4 inches thick with a large embossed star circling the keyhole. - eBay (5 March 2010)

This padlock had a high bid of $195 (Plus $11.50 Shipping).

LILLY IRON Handcuffs - McColl Reproduction

Here is a nice reproduction set of Lilly Irons.

UNIQUE EARLY HAND-MADE IAN MCCOLL REPRODUCTION LILLY IRON

This is a very beautifully made and very early Ian McColl piece made about 1979 or 1980. The patina is actually from age. It comes complete with a very unusual key, which is articulated to be used by an escape artist. Works perfectly. Can't find or afford a real lilly iron, then this is the handcuff for you. Made VERY well, and not a production model, but rather every hinge bent by hand, made to perfection to the smallest detail. - eBay (24 Dec 2009)

Apparently this reproduction is still being made or at least still is available.

These Lilly Irons had a high bid of $227.50 (Plus $9 Shipping). Which is about what a currently-made set goes for.

(6) Cleveland 4 Way PadLocks - 5 different models

This was a collection too good to pass up given the number of other 4-Way padlocks that have come up for sale on eBay:

Greetings from West Texas....I been accumilating Cleveland locks over the past 10 years or so with the intention of using them on various buildings, gates and such but found out early that they do not like the dust, wind, ice, heat associated with my part of the country, so I started collecting different models just because I think there really cool! About a year ago I was going through some things and found them. It happens I had a drill with a wire brush attachment nearby and went to town! Five of them sure did turn out purdy! (Found the 6th one later). Offered today are 6 Cleveland locks, 5 being different in one way or the other from the next! SIX locks, 5 Different...one price!

Save some time hunting them down over the next 10 years. They do not come up often, especially with keys! Average Ebay price for a Cleveland w/key is $30-40 dollars BEFORE shipping!. I've saved this search for many years!

Here's the lowdown!

PIC 2&3...key code LBM, lock code FFTOY, 2 locks, 1 key keyed alike. I don't know if it is an original key as with most of the Clevelands I ran across, the key and lock are NOT coded the same. Large head key opens BOTH locks. Key CANNOT be removed out of lock when open. When the shaft is forced down to the close position, the key will manually turn the key to the lock position. Key is stubborn in one lock. This same lock has a weak spring that feels like gunk is just holding the shaft down. These 2 locks have an oil port on the bottom. Only the key code is stamped on the bottom. Face has traditional "CLEVELAND 4-WAY LOCK"

PIC 4&5 key code OOUTF, lock code OOUTF, 1 lock, wider, heavier an a tad bit shorter than LBM lock with a much thicker shaft. Spring does NOT pop when opening, needs assistance. Key CAN be removed in open position. Key code and "pat pending" stamped on bottom. No oil port. Looks as a previous owner grinded 2 grooves in key and lock for quick ID. Face has traditional "CLEVELAND 4-WAY LOCK"

Pic 6&7 key code EERUH, lock code EERUH, 1 lock, considerably smaller than LBM lock with a tad bit smaller shaft. "UP" is stamped on the key and the lock below the traditional "CLEVELAND 4-WAY LOCK" face to idiotproof the user not to insert the key in the wrong way. Key code and "pat pending" stamped on the bottom. Spring is strong. Key CAN be removed in open position. No oil port.

Pic 8&9 key code TWUT, lock code TWUT, 1 lock with a offset keyhead stamped on one side TWUT and the other (yes, "4" is spelled out) THE FOUR WAY LOCK CO. CLEVELAND OHIO. I believe this is one of there earliest models. Instead of the traditional "CLEVELAND 4-WAY LOCK" on the face, it reads "CLEVELAND 4-WAY OHIO". It has the idiotproof "UP" stamped below "OHIO" and on the shaft of the key. It has no oil ports. Key CAN be removed opened. Spring a VERY strong. On the bottom "pat pending" is on the same side as the key code. Looks to be the same size as Pic 6&7 EERUH but with a much thicker shaft.

Pic 10&11 key code OOOEU, lock code OOOEU with a large thick shaft, the only lock that wasn't wirebrushed. A groove was grinded in the shaft for quick ID I presume. It is about the same size as Pic 8&9 TWUT but with a larger, thicker shaft. Pat pending and key code stamped on opposite sides of bottom Traditional CLEVELAND 4-WAY LOCK on face with idiotproof "UP" stamped below and key shaft.

WHEW! There you have it folks.....a lot of time studying and pecking at this computer. Took 2 pics of each lock and can honestly tell you they are all different, except the 2 keyed alike. - eBay (23 August 2009)

This set of padlocks sold for $160 (Plus Free Shipping).

Tower Balco Leg Irons

I like the chains on this set of leg irons.

A nice pair of original 1920's - 1930s vintage leg irons. This pair is very similar to the Tower Leg Irons, but this pair is unmarked and the iron links in the chain are flat rather than bent as are the tower chain links. Flat chain links are a characteristic of Balco leg irons and I assume this to be a pair of Balco leg irons. If someone can positively identify these from the photos as not being Balco leg irons, please let me know. These irons seem to be slightly heavier than a Tower Leg Iron, but I no longer have a pair of Towers to compare. Both locks open with the key that is shown in the photo. I am not certain, but I assume this is the original key. This key seems slightly smaller than a Tower key. As shown in the photos, this pair has a plain iron finish with no plating and there are some minor rust spots. One lock case has deeper rust and pitting, but this does not affect the function of these cuffs. If someone was careful, I think it would be possible to polish these to look quite nice, but all I did was to lightly oil the cuffs and wipe them with a rag. - eBay (30 July 2009)

These leg irons had a high bid of $106.50 (Plus $9 Shipping).

My handcuff collection

Here are some photos of my restraint collection.

This is not everything. I have a couple other pieces I have yet to work into the display. Other than the smallest set of Bean handcuffs (which I am still working on getting a small enough key) they all function.

Another Bean Giant Handcuffs Auction

Here is another set of Bean Giants handcuffs that came up for auction:

I am selling a pair of Bean Giant handcuffs. The nickel plating is about 95% there, there are some small scratches on the surface. Both ends swing freely and ratchet right into place. When I open the lock, one of the latches is a bit stickey, but it does open. The key is not original, the original was broken off inside; it came out when I opened the cuffs for the first time. I will send the broken bit with the cuffs.

The words "Patent Applied For" is stamped on one of the tongues (Pat Apl'd For). I am not a handcuff expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I know that this usually indicates an early version of a product. I looked up the patent, which is dated Nov. 1, 1887, so this pair is at least that old, but more likely a year or so older.

As I already stated, I am not an expert, so please ask any questions, I will do my best to answer them. Because of the age, these cuffs are being sold 'As-Is' - eBay (2 April 09)

This set of Bean Giant handcuffs had a high bid of $1,354 (Plus $8 Shipping) but failed to meet the reserve price.

I later obtained this set of Bean Giant handcuffs from the seller for $1,600.
