VINTAGE HIATT CAP LOCK 'HANDCUFF'

This is a very simple design but also very secure once the chain gets passed through the hole. This is the working end of prison chains that once locked prisoners together for transport.
VINTAGE HIATT CAP LOCK HANDCUFF. Greetings, Hello fellow collectors, Here is a very scarce cuff, complete with the cap lock cover. I suspect this hiatt was made late 19th to early 20th century. The cuff is in very good condition and would make a fine edition to any collection as many advanced collections lack this piece. The cuff would of been likely attached to a transport chain with a group of prisoners. Condition of this item is excellent as most are a rust bucket that i have seen over the years. Normal ware and tear is present and some light oxidation. The cap fits perfectly, it does have a small ding you can see in the last pic. Outstanding specimen! Ships priority mail with insurance. Only ships to the lower 48 and no international of any kind. Comes with a money back guarantee! - eBay (March, 2022)
This 'Handcuff' had a bid of $334.99 (Plus $15 Shipping) but the auction was ended by the seller 'because the item was no longer available'. -----

`Hiatt` Style Cap Wrist Locks

This is a very nice, albeit somewhat rusty rare set of Cap Wrist Locks.

A beautiful old chain and cap wrist locks for restraining a group of prisoners, in this case five. I believe that this possibly dates to the end of the C19th, C1890. I think that these cap wrist locks were originally designed by Hiatt. It must be an interesting story to learn how a chain that would have held a gang of prisoners came to end up at a car boot sale in North Yorkshire in a box load of rusty old spanners... A google search for `chain room` at Millbank or Dartmoor will give a result showing these items in situ (see photo below). Pictures of chain rooms show the restraints hung on the walls and I wonder if they would have been numbered when being stored, perhaps the numbers relate to different wrist sizes as, as can be seen from one of the photos they did come in different sizes to accomodate varying wrists. Or maybe the number was allocated to a particular prisoner ... so that if a wrist lock was missing so was the prisoner !

This particular chain measures 58" long. There are 5 cap wrist locks, one of which is missing the actual `cap`, all of the others have stamped matching numbers (see photos). The largest in size are stamped 52 & 65, the next size down is stamped 13, the next is stamped 46, and the smallest is stamped 11. The bit that looks like half a pair of handcuffs is in fact the end lock which was used to stop the wrist locks from coming off the gang chain. This end lock has no key. I have been over this with a fine tooth comb and can find not even the faintest hint of a makers stamp. As you can see from the photos, I havnt cleaned or touched this, so there is some surface rusting, but the hinges on the locks are good. If you have any further questions I would welcome such enquiries.

Just been horrified by the prices for postage. The parcel will weigh over 2 kgs which means that it will have to be sent by Courier.... or... I can split it into 2 parcels which will keep it below the Royal Mail limit but in most cases there wont be much of a difference when you add in 2 tracking costs. If you have any further suggestions or preferences please let me know. - eBay (4 Nov 2012)
This set of Cap Wrist Locks had a high bid of 831 British Pounds / $1,322.12 (Plus Shipping).

Hiatt 19th Century Female Handcuffs

These look like a miniature set of handcuffs.

A Pair of very old solid HIATT antique handcuffs . Stamped Hiatt 1 on sides and stamped 511 HIATT on key ends.Made of wrought iron and they came to light from an elderly relation who had them from her parents. Guessing at date of turn of the century as not an expert although have seen some Victorian Cuffs on Ebay which had similar design although must more modern in appearance. These are stamped British Made warranted wrought [I presume iron/steel]

They are small and measure 2 1/2 " across They Fit a woman or Child but not a Mans wrist. Not sure if Hiatt 1 signifies the smallest size. They unlock with the key turned in a clockwise direction. The key can be removed when in locked position. They are in very good condition and keys and locks on both cuffs are in full working order . - eBay (5 July 09)

This set of handcuffs had a high bid of 335.67 British Pounds / $543.90 (Plus 3.95 Pounds Shipping).

Locking Hiatt Grip - Nippers

Here is a real neat set of locking nippers:

I recently purchased the Hiatt grip shown below. Both the cuff and the key are marked with the name Hiatt and a number "2". The grip is built differently than the standard Hiatt grips that close with a simple catch. On this one the two halfs of the grip come together is a very tight complentary "claw" closure. To open it a screw key has to be screwed in depressing the bottom claw. The grip then pops open. Everything is very tight and the grip is actually very difficult to close.

Once closed it is very secure and there is no way you are going to open it by hand. The spring action is simply to strong.

Overall it is a very interesting cuff for the collection, but it is easy to see why they were never popular. It is just to hard to operate. And to use it you would have to carry it in an open position. - Handcuffs.org Forum

Hiatts England 2010C Closed Heavy Handcuffs

The metal insert in the swing-through part of the cuff is very interesting.

Hiatt Factory Custom Closed 2010C Handcuffs
Nickel Plated

Hiatts is a name known and respected by patrol officers around the world. These cuffs are made by Hiatts of England, but they are not for patrol officers. These are Hiatts answer to requests for a heavy duty version of their famous arrest handcuffs. These have all the great features of the model 2010 handcuffs with additional steel riveted in place blocking the swing through bow. These would be inconvenient for a police officer making an arrest since they would have to be opened with a key prior to application. The best use for these would be in situations where security is more important than convenience. The closed bow prevents prying them open. Many police departments have removed the seatbelts from their cruisers following incidents where the metal buckle was used to pry the bow apart on standard cuffs.

Exceeding all published test standards, the Hiatts standard steel handcuffs possess many unique features: 19 locking positions, standard double locking mechanism, Three independently floating ratchet bars, heavy-duty rivets, reinforced steel swivels, each set serial numbered, two standard keys provided.

Special note to collectors. Hiatts of England has stopped operations. Hiatt USA, a subsidiary of Armor Holdings, is currently setting up their new factory, and Hiatt products are in very short supply. Items like this that are marked "Made in England" are instant collectables. Bid early and often to get this unusual example of an "end of an era" restraint. Chances are good that this will not be a product made in the new factory and there will certainly never be any more marked as English made.

This restraint set is exactly the same setup that hospitals, jails and prisons use for dealing with difficult subjects. So whether you need a set of solid restraints for your line of duty activities or are interested in an authentic item for your restraint collection, these are quite the item. No theatrical dungeon recreation would be complete without a full set of steel restraints.

These are new from the factory and have not been used. We are not suggesting any particular use. We are not responsible for any damages resulting from the use or misuse of this item. Manufacturer warranty applies, eRestraint does not offer any guarantee for suitability for any particular purpose. - eBay (11 Feb 09)

This set of handcuffs went for $64 (Plus $9 Shipping).
