Vintage Cleveland 4-Way Prison Lock & Key N/R L@@K!
This padlock sold for $31.75 (Plus $5 Shipping).Cleveland 4-way locks and padlocks were considered to be THE high security locking system of their time...with a odd-shaped 4-way key and cylinder..Mainly in the 1940's and 50's....Cleveland 4-way Lock Manufacturer also produced different types of locks for many applications, not just padlocks...Still today according to some locksmith buddies, considering no one enjoys taking these Cleveland locks apart to decode...it's a nightmare even for the professional. I always purchased the nastiest Cleveland locks, refurbished, and added to my collection. This particular lock was cleaned, and with a brass wire wheel, brought back to it's bright beauty. The are 2 notches grinded in the lock and 2 in the key. It was a common practice for quick ID to a common door or slot in a correctional setting... Padlocks in prisons were common and had to be high security due to a lot of thugs.............. (Temporary Housed Under Goverment Supervision) were professional locksmiths by criminal trade...These locks, in my opinion, are still virtually pickproof...
The spring on the cylinder is very tight (this is a good thing.) The spring on the shaft is weak and will not pop open like it should, and when it is open, wiggles a tad bit but is definately secured. All the Cleveland locks I have cannot have the key removed when the lock is in the open position. The key can be removed in the open position on this lock. I have 5 different models, and on 4 locks, the key can be remove in the open position. One model the key cannot be removed open. ..............................A lock offered last week (click on link) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=250397838900
claimed they were purchased and used by the railroad. I do not doubt this, but I know if fact they were used in the midwest prison systems also, as my first one purchased was from a former employee and then Warden from the Montana and Washington State Systems.
This is a beautiful piece. Lots of photos so you be the judge! - eBay (26 April 09)
