American Hatchet PadLock

Here is a very interesting padlock.

Up for bid is a rare 19th century Iron Lever hatchet-shaped padlock. The lock has a steel case, with a brass hasp, and is 3 3/4“ high X 2 1/2” wide at its base. A tiny “5” is stamped into the hasp (see photo #3). Though I have seen several examples of this type of lock, the condition of this one is superior to any of them. The original finish on the lock-body is in extraordinarily good condition, and there are only light scratches on the hasp. I do not have the key. An example of this lock can be found on Page 93 of Frank Arnall’s book The Padlock Collector, where it is referred to as The “Hatchet Lock.” A lock identical to the one I am offering, sold in June of last year for $800 (to see a record of this sale please go to: http://www.1st-net-lock-museum.com/sc2.htm item SC2T). We are a non-smoking household. All items are packed with great care. This item will ship in a $5 flat rate box. I only charge what it costs me to send something. International buyers please ask for shipping costs prior to bidding. Please contact me with any questions or for additional photos.

On Dec-25-09 at 18:22:39 PST, seller added the following information:

Dear tooner777, There seems to be a heat mark on the bottom end of the shackle and the shackle seems to be irregular,is this so.Thank You Dear *********: No, there isn't any heat mark on the bottom of the lock; all of the rivets are fully intact and the case has never been opened. The Hatchet lock is designed with the hasp slightly off-center, with the hasp opening out of the right-side; when looking at the photo showing the front of the lock, you can see the pivot rivet for the hasp on the far right (it is the same for the example found in the Arnall book, as well as for the one in the Net lock Museum). The one I have has obviously never been tampered with or forced open. When pressed, the hasp springs back nicely, so the main spring is fine. The mechanism is sound, and when shaken there is no sound of any broken or loose parts inside. The lock comes to its new owner just as I acquired it--I have not cleaned or modified it in any way. I hope this helps. Dear tooner777, Thank You,you answer my questions and then some. - ******* - eBay (29 Dec 2009)

This padlock had a high bid of $394.99 (Plus $5 Shipping).

US INT. REVENUE COUNTER Padlock

Here is another example of a very rare padlock with internal counter.

A rare solid brass MIX patent counting lock made by the Townsend Lock Mfg. Co., Buffalo, NY. This is a quality lock that is not seen in this good condition anymore. This lock is probably the first US made counting lock. The counting mechanism has an enclosed nickle plated wheel with numbers from 1 to 32. Each time the lock is opened the number changes in a small window. The lock stops at 32 to prevent the lock from cycling through the numbers. A wax seal cup holds the stop. The wax must be broken to reset the lock. The stop has been rotated 90 degrees to make the lock more friendly to operate. The stop can be activated by removing a screw and rotating the stop.

The lock is in very good condition with no major damage. It only has the usual small dents and scrapes found in a lock that has seen service. The lock is well marked US INTERNAL REVENUE on the rear. The lock comes with an operating key and is mechanically perfect. The lock has a five lever mechanism. SIZE: 2.75"w x 3.25"h x 1.25"d. 1.1lb. - eBay (24 Jan 2010)

This padlock had a high bid of $762.99 (Plus $5 Shipping).

Super Expensive Silver Plated Gucci Handcuffs

Not sure what to think of these. They are only silver plated. They are not even real handcuffs in that they unlock with a push of a button.

This auction is for a pair of authentic Gucci handcuffs. I purchased these myself at Gucci Beverly Hills. Only a limited number were made/sold. I thought I lost these but came across them while unpacking a moving box the other day. They are in good condition - there are no major scratches - they are a bit tarnished and will need to be polished. I did a search for the handcuffs and was surprised to see that Christie's Auction House recently sold a pair for $2400. Keyless operation. There is a button you press and the cuff opens. Each cuff says GUCCI made in Italy on one side and the number 161297 on the other. Great for a got it all Gucci fan or someone who is into cuffs. Silver plated. Super cool. U.S. bidders only, please. - eBay (17 Jan 2010)

This piece of Gucci jewelry had a high bid of $699.99 (Plus Free Shipping).

Small Bramah & Co. Brass Padlock

A very nice and apparently rare padlock:

This is a very scarce and antique, small Bramah & Company all brass padlock.

It is a small padlock, almost a miniature padlock, but not quite. It is operated by the unique and unusual Bramah system in which the unusual Bramah key pushes in levers that open up the padlock.

You push the key in the keyhole, you will feel the key push in against a little resistance.

Than you will turn the key to the right, and you can now lift up the shackle to open the padlock.

The key stays in the padlock until it is locked.

To lock the padlock, you put down the shackle and turn the key to the left, the shackle is now locked, and you can remove the key.

This padlock measures 2 inches high, 1+1/4 inches across, the thickness of the body of the padlock is almost 1/2 inch, but with the tubular key hole entrance, measures close to one inch thick.

The key is a working key, not original and functions superbly, the padlock is in very nice condition, works great and will be one, if not THE, highlight of your collection!

I never thought I would sell this, but times being as they are, some treasures must go.

This padlock is not cheap, and collectors know what this is. The Bramah is considered one of the best locking systems ever devised, extremely secure, this was state of the art science 100 or so years ago when this was made.

There is a sliding keyhole cover on this little padlock.

On the reverse of this padlock you can see the words, although very faded, BRAMAH & CO., there is also what looks like an address, but can't make out.

On the front of the padlock are the numbers: 10201

I PAID OVER $300.00 FOR THIS PADLOCK A WHILE AGO, $300 IS MY RESERVE, AND THAT IS A VERY FAIR PRICE FOR THIS EXTREMELY SCARCE PADLOCK WITH WORKING KEY. THANKS! - eBay (21 Dec 2009)

This padlock had a high bid of $355 (Plus $11.50 Shipping).

1887 BEAN GIANT HANDCUFFS

My favorite type of handcuffs.

Here are a great example of the original BEAN GIANT handcuffs. They are only marked with the early patent date of NOV. 1, 87. They are in almost perfect condition with no breaks or cracks. They have NEVER been opened or messed with in any way except the old sheriff hand-etched his initals of "C/K" on the reverse side of the keyhole. The keyhole is undamaged and has no modification. The original BEAN key is provided and they work great. Turn the key counter clockwise, the two buttons pop up and the hasps will swing freely until the button is pressed down and this locks the hasps. The key has no markings and has a slight "twist" from someone turning it clockwise, but it is solid and shows no weakness, it will open them everytime!

The nickel plating is all original. It shows only the slightest wear on the ends of the hasps from use. There are only a few tiny spots of rust around the keyhole area and in a few other places, but these are the best ones I have seen in a while! They are used and original, but were well cared for. They are factory and were never opened for repair and never seen bubba's grinding wheel. They are uncleaned, unpolished and are new to the market, ready for your collection! They are 6" long overall, 2 7/8" tall, the hole for your wrist fully closed is 2 7/16" across. - eBay (12 Dec 2009)

This Bean Giant had a high bid of $1,750 (Plus Free Shipping).

Replica Mckenzie Handcuffs

Missing this special item from your collection and just can't afford to spend thousands to buy one when they pop up on eBay, well seems that you can purchase a nice replica for a fraction of the cost.

Mckenzie Handcuffs

These are a reproduction of the "famous" McKenzie Mitts invented in the mid 1800s by Jacob Mackenzie. Possibly the first "high security" cuff ever constructed. The designer was a escort guard who was jumped by a prisoner and shot with his own gun during the escape. His response was to design this device.

£299 - link

Very nicely done.
