19th Century E. Cotterill & Co A20 Padlock

What an amazing padlock. The final bit price is simply amazing. Then again, it is the one and only new Cotterill padlock that has come up for auction that I can remember.

Original, boxed, mint condition with 2 amazing key still wrapped in oiled paper.

This lock is unused in great condition, I have googled this item and found out it is one of the most desired locks out there. It has all the marks and patent stamped on it and the original box has a small hand written line “Brass Lock 1898” I personally think it is a bit earlier more 1870 ish.

E COTTERILL'S Padlock Climax Detector Unpickable Powder Proof c.1850's

Here is a nice and shiny example of a Cotterill padlock.

This is a large/heavy brass antique padlock manufactured in the 19th Century by EDWIN COTTERILL of Birmingham, England. The lock comes with it's original key and spare. The lock is in perfect working order and can be both locked and unlocked by both keys, which are still a good fit, with little free play. There is minimal free play in the hasp.

This particular example was known as the CLIMAX DETECTOR and was warranted at the time to be both Power Proof and Unpickable.

The brass casing is clearly marked with the maker's name, as are the hasp and both keys. One key still has it's original protective brass sheath. The padlock still has it's original sliding escutcheon, which I understand is often missing.

The padlock measures just over 5" (13cm) from top of the hasp to the bottom of the casing, which is 3" (7.6cm) wide and maximum 1 3/4" (4.5cm) thick. The lock with both keys weighs almost 1.2kgs, so is surprisingly heavy. - eBay (23 April 2013)

Edwin Cotterill’s padlock

Edwin Cotterill’s padlocks are amongst the most prized by collectors and are extremely rare. This is a really big, extremely sturdy and heavy one (nearly 1kg) – it is 5 inches tall and has company name and factory location (Birmingham) and makers marks. The lock is working perfectly and has two original very complicated keys. It is in great condition. The escutcheon is held in place by a little sprung button on the body of the lock. Vintage English-made brass padlock with key. Dimensions approximately 6.5cm (at widest point) x 10cm (closed) x 2cm. Potential bidders should be aware that this padlock weighs 640gm! The padlock is in working order but potential bidders should also be aware that while the one-remaining key still turns, it is bent. The key has the number 18 stamped on it. The manufacturer's name is stamped on the lock itself, the key and the cover of the keyhole, 'E Gotterill & Co, Birmingham'. E Cotterill Acme "B" Padlock

These are very nice padlocks.

Very Rare E Cotterill Acme "B" padlock and two keys. Cotterill's padlocks are greatly prized by collectors and very rare. It is very sturdy and heavy (700gm.) and is nearly 4.5 inches tall closed. It bears the marks E Cotterill and Co. manufacturer, Acme Lock, Birmingham. Both keys are also also marked Cotterills Birmingham Patent Acme B. It is in good working condition - see pictures for condition. The Escutcheon cover is held in place by a sprung button on the baseplate, operated by the end of the key. The lock has been in my possession for nearly 40 years and was originally used on the entrance of a famous Leeds silversmith's premises. - eBay (27 March 2012)

This is not just an extremly rare lock but the only variant of any other example I've ever seen.

This lock and key are original and in the BEST condition I have ever seen!

Great addition for any collector, this lock and key works FLAWLESSLY.

The markings are clear and in excellent condition!!!

I have yet to find another with these markings.

19thC Edwin Cotterill padlock

These padlocks always seem to go for such extreme amounts, and yet they do seem to come up often enough that if you really want one, you will get a chance, if you dig deep enough into your pocket. To make things worse, there are a couple different models if you look at all the Cotterill padlocks I have cataloged over the years.

Very rare 19thC Edwin Cotterill padlock with original key. Five inches high and weighing nearly one kg.

It is in excellent working order and good condition for its age. The number 37077 is stamped on the front of the lock and also on the key.

The escutcheon is held in place by a small button at the bottom of the keyhole. The end of the key is used to depress the button in order to move the escutcheon and allow access to the keyhole. - eBay (30 Jan 2012)

Cotterill style R & E padlock

This is a very cool style padlock. Unfortunately, this price is well out of my price range.

Super rare Russel and Erwin Cotterill style padlock. This is one of only a handful known to exist. This one actually has the original keyhole cover On most of these locks, the keyhole cover is lost and a reproduction keykole cover has been attached. The lock is in excellent condition, has a beautiful patina and the body has no dents in it. Comes with 2 original keys, both of which are marked "R & E". - eBay (14 Dec 2010)

19th C Cotterill Patent Climax Detector Padlock

A beautiful padlock.

This is a rare 19th century Cotterill Patent Climax Detector padlock, complete with original key. The padlock is marked ’unpickable and powder-proof’, as well as with all the name details. Measures 13.4cm top to bottom when closed, and is in good working order. There are a few age related knocks, to be expected, but generally excellent. The lock is not stiff, the original key is still present, and it would be a perfectly usable padlock. Acme Padlock - E. Cotterill & Co, Padlock

What is there to say. This is a very nice padlock.

Early "124" number (same number on original key). Very nice condition; unusual lock mechanism by Cotterill works smoothly/well. Also unusual bitted key. Maker's name details stamped on lock, key and shackle.

Drop is held in position over keyhole by a spring stub. Brass case has 3 neatly located screws around edge; presumably to allow circular top plate to be removed for demonstration/exhibition use. Lock was purchased from major private collection sale at Sothebys, London - a rare lock.

Size 5" (13cm) long x 3.1"(8cm) wide x 0.9"(2.2cm) deep. key 2.4" long.

Cotterill’s Climax Detector Padlock

A very nice looking padlock.

Edwin Cotterill’s padlocks are amongst the most prized by collectors and the fantatically named Climax Detector lock is a rarity. This is a really big, extremely sturdy and heavy one – it is just over 5 inches tall and has makers marks, numbers and the pronouncement that the lock is “unpickable and powderproof”. The lock is working and has the original key. The lock is really well worn from heavy usage. The escutcheon that would have covered the keyhole is missing and it has some dings and small dents. There is a couple of millimeters play in the hasp but it locks completely solidly. The key is a bit corroded but you can still make out “climax detector”. - eBay (1 Nov 2009)
