1857 Pin Tumbler Linus Yale PadLock

This is a very interesting padlock. I have never seen one like it before. The price qualifies this for being 'rare.'

You are bidding on an authentic Linus Yale Pin Tumbler pad-lock patented in 1857. Linus Yale was an American inventor and manufacturer of locks. His most famous invention was the re-design of the ancient Egyptian wooden lock with pins and now one of the most popular lock designs worldwide. Linus Yale opened a lock shop in the early 1840s in Newport, New York, specializing in bank locks.

This is truly very rare and hard to find. Very collectible. One is on display at the Connecticut museum of locks. If you notice the above picture 2 & 3, when the patent number was stamped, the last number looks like an error and was over stamped with a 7. This makes this lock very collectible. Here is an interesting combination padlock.

This is a great early padlock that is very hard to find. It is a Josiah J. Deal, of Canton, Ohio Permutation Padlock that was patented on New Years Day, 1895. The lock works beautifully, and I took photos of it completely disassembled for you lock collectors that have never seen one apart. This combination can be set to many different combinations by switching the discs around, or turning them over. This lock is a little more complex than just a basic stack in that it has recessed cuts in the discs on both sides to make it harder to pick. Photo # 7 shows one side of the disc, and the other side of it is exactly the same. This lock is marked "PAT. APL'D. FOR" on the top plate. It was nickel plated at one time, but most the nickel is worn off. The lock is 2-1/2" High, and 1-3/16" in diameter. I will send copies of the patent (#531,676) papers to the winner of the lock.

This listing is for an authentic vintage antique padlock. This is a brass padlock with the name SIBERIAN on each side of the lock. The name is in raised lettering within a recess at the top of the lock, Stamped on one side below the lettering is "2M". I DO NOT HAVE THE KEY. Lock has flat faces, with oval opening at center. It measures 2" x 2-1/2" in outside measurements. It is in very good used condition, with no batters, pitting, gouges, or repairs.

These handcuffs were made famous by Houdini. Just Google Bean Giant Handcuffs and you will see.

Condition seems to be excellent in my opinion considering the age. There are some dings and spots of rust otherwise the nickel plating is 95% or better. They come with what looks like an original key that also has some tiny rust spots or dark areas. It looks to me like the cover may have been taken off at one time? Look at my photos and judge for your self. The handcuffs are in working order and lock and unlock as they should. When you turn the key to unlock they will stay unlocked until you push the buttons for each cuff side. A neat feature. The cover is stamped PAT.NOV.1.87. - eBay (16 Nov 2011)

Iron lantern bow Italian key

Here is something you don't see every day. A key that solde for close to $2,500!

Fine quality steel key with a highly decorative pierced and cut lantern bow and flared bit with many teeth. The key is Italian and is fairly typical in form of a style that was first made in the Renaissance. The photos show the complexity of the key including the nicely cut four-pillared cupola on top of the key and the decoration covering much of the surface of the iron. There is one small braised repair to one of the spokes in one of the circular “windows” on the side of the key – this is just about visible on the photos but the repair has been done so precisely as to be nearly invisible. The Clarke Combination Padlock manufactured in Baltimore, MD. Solid brass construction with patent dates of 1873 and re-issued 1876. The lock measures about 3 1/4" tall X 2 1/4" wide X 1 1/4" thick. There are 12 buttons marked A-I & L,O,U used to set the combination. It is marked on the back 1873 and 1876 patent dates. Do not have a combination. Very hard combination padlock to find. This is a very interesting design for a combination padlock. Unfortunately, I have never seen one. Too bad this one does not have the combination.

This is a rare William Langeman combination lock. This is a great and very hard to come by lock measuring 2 1/2" x 3 1/2".. This is in the open position and all the dials turn as they should but there is no combo.. The patina is rich and the condition overall is very good, someone at some point re secured the back.. Not distracting and dispaly's well.. A great investment quality lock for about 1/2 the money - eBay (18 Nov 2011)

Wells College 6 lever pushkey pancake padlock

There are lots of items listed in eBay that have 'Rare' in the description. I tend not to include that description in the postings as Rare is pretty much relative.

The one good indication of how rare an item is, is the price that an item sells for. For me, you are getting into the rare territory once you get to $500 and above. This is why I have labels recognizing items that sell for $500 and over $1,000.

This here padlock might be rare. The owner certainly thinks so and has it listed for well over $1,000. That said, I think this is the third time listing it with no buyer so far. Still, you only need one buyer who is willing to pay suck a price to make you a happy seller...

This is a rare "Wells College" 6 lever pancake padlock. The lock rates a 9 on a scale of 3-9, 9 being the rarest in the pancake padlock list. This measures 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" and is in excellent overall condition with very light wear and just a few minor dings. No hammer dents, no prying with a screwdriver. This has at some point I think been cleaned and lacquered. You'll have to look long and hard for a better example. Buyer pays s/i. Paypal payment due within 3 days. Edwin Cotterill’s padlock

This is one of the padlocks that I have been hunting for a while. But until the prices get more down to earth, I will have to simply keep looking. This is a very nice example.

Edwin Cotterill’s padlocks are amongst the most prized by collectors and are extremely rare. This is a really big, extremely sturdy and heavy one (nearly 1kg) – it is 5 inches tall and has company name and factory location (Birmingham) and makers marks. The lock is working perfectly and has the original key. It is in great condition with a very nice, rich patina. The escutcheon is held in place by a little sprung button on the body of the lock. The end of the key is used to depress the button and move the escutcheon to reveal the keyhole. - eBay (6 Nov 2011)

This US Registered Mail lock has a cast case, shackle collar, and rotating shackle made of architectural bronze. It is circa 1880s but continued in usage through the 1920s, being repaired when necessary. Although ''rotary'' locks have been occasionally listed on eBay being described as the style selected by Harry Houdini for his renowned mail bag escape trick, prop photos reveal that he used this earlier style of lock that opened with a flat key that he concealed within his cheek. The obsolete flat-style key was assigned to the Treasury Department. Although registered mail shipments passed through the postal system with this lock, Post Office Department employees could not open those pouches with their standard-issue keys. Only U.S. Treasury personnel were assigned keys to unlock shipments of currency and coin.

This lock is sold with a professionally-fitted reproduction key that operates the lock and is in excellent condition. There is a small bronze flap covering the rotary numbers ''in the window'' that is currently 0131, meaning it had been opened 131 times. The lock serial number is T 2449 and is ex-Mundy collection. All features of the lock are clear and distinct, even though the back view is fuzzy around the edges because used a camera which doesn't have much depth of field for close-up snapshots.

The ''T-Series'' lock and key were the subject of a short story appearing in RAILROAD STORIES, unknown date, pages 102-127. If anyone has seen this article and knows the issue date, I'd appreciate the information. I will include a copy of the article that was digitally scanned and converted to a document format. There are a few inaccuracies within the story, but it nonetheless makes interesting reading about this legendary lock. - eBay (10/30/2011)

Here is a nice Lion's Head brass Yale padlock. Too bad it does not have a key to go with it. Still, it makes a nice paperweight.

Here is a second North Pole Commemorative padlock.

Beautiful old brass padlock commemorates Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expedition. Manufactured by J. Walter Miller Lock Co. of Lancaster ,Pa. ( Company stopped producing padlocks in the 1930's ). There is no key, and the previous owner oiled the lock inside and out. The hasp has quite a bit of play, yet seems like it would be hard to close; there is a slight gap/bend in the outer plate near the joint. Looking inside, I see a rough edge where a piece of brass has been broken. I'm not a lock person so don't know the name of this part, but will try to show it in my photos. Cosmetically, apart from a bit of green paint, and the usual nicks and dings, this is a very handsome piece. - eBay (8 Aug 2011)

1880s US Registered Mail lock Treasury Houdini T-series

Here is a great mail seal padlock. Locks with counters are some of the most interesting.

This US Registered Mail lock has a cast case, shackle collar, and rotating shackle made of architectural bronze. It is circa 1880s but continued in usage through the 1920s, being repaired when necessary. Although ''rotary'' locks have been occasionally listed on eBay being described as the style selected by Harry Houdini for his renowned mail bag escape trick, prop photos reveal that he used this earlier style of lock that opened with a flat key that he concealed within his cheek. The obsolete flat-style key was assigned to the Treasury Department. Although registered mail shipments passed through the postal system with this lock, Post Office Department employees could not open those pouches with their standard-issue keys. Only U.S. Treasury personnel were assigned keys to unlock shipments of currency and coin.

This lock is sold with a professionally-fitted reproduction key that operates the lock and is in excellent condition. There is a small bronze flap covering the rotary numbers ''in the window'' that is currently 0446, meaning it had been opened 446 times. The lock serial number is T 954 and is ex-Mundy collection. All features of the lock are clear and distinct, even though the back view is fuzzy around the edges because used a camera which doesn't have much depth of field for close-up snapshots. - eBay (29 May 2011)

Bar Rigid Handcuffs Shackles - 1874

Here is a restraint that does deserve the designation 'Rare'. This can be confirmed by the large price paid by the winner to claim this set for their collection.

I would say this is a Super Rare Set of HandCuffs up for Grabs......there are no stamps or marks of any sort on these............I have owned bought sold/traded quite a few sets of restraints and have never personally seen a set like these....I have seen pics of somewhat similar styles......after extensive research I found what I believe is the patent for these................please be sure to copy paste and check out........................http://www.google.com/patents?id=o81hAAAAEBAJ&zoom=4&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q&f=false ..........................................

its dated 1874......and there are 3 variations of this set listed and these are Fig 2 the ones in the middle ..................they measure a touch over 13" long and 3 1/4" wide at the wrist and the diameter at the end is 1 3/8".................the locking device is a Square Head Bolt which locks the wrist restraints on to the bar,the square head bolt remains fixed in the wrist restraint,thus the cut-out in the sleeve to accomadate the threaded part of the bolt.....

As this auction comes to a close I would like to address some chatter....... to straighten out any possible questions raised........ and ease any over analyzing of the patent description.........First Off.... this piece can only be truly appreciated when it is handled in person.....and that there is no way it can be fully appreciated in pics...when you hold it,it is evident that they have been around for a long time and handled extensively and that the Wear and Patina are Even and Genuine,the middle bar has a deep patina with 98% of the plating gone but some of the plating can still be seen on the ends of the bar,so if this piece did in fact make it into a jailhouse/prison situation the guard would have the prisoner cuffed in the rear because cuffed in front this would be a weapon,so when cuffed in the rear how would the guard guide the prisoner but by using the middle bar as a handle thus wearing off the plating and darkening the brass........the nickel plating is still on the two cuff parts but has dulled with age and is worn in spots from repeted handling...There is absolutely no way to ascertain this from the pictures ,the flash of the camera on the reflective surface of the plating alters the image so that its tough to capture its true color ....................................And why are there no markings, of any kind, on this piece?......Theres Nothing That Says there Needs to be,if this is in fact the Patent Model all it would've had on it is a couple paper tags................................ the threads on the brass bolt are perfect,Could these have been cut on any machines available in 1874?Absolutely!!!.....Screw lathes were were invented mid 1700's and perfected early 1800's,for more education on that............try.....http://www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Screw.html......and.........http://inventors.about.com/od/sstartinventions/a/screwdriver.htm

UPDATE

It helps to keep in mind that most things that appear to be too good to be true most likely are, especially in the lock collecting world when apparently 'rare' items are to be found in India, a place known for fakes.

I am now convinced that the listed above was for a copy of a Hobbs padlock, as magically two more have been found in India. What are the chances? And just what would be the chances that they would all be listed with a 'Buy-it-Now' price....

OREGON BOOT Wyoming State Penitentiary 1900-20's

These do not come up for sale every day and I daresay the price for this one was near-affordable, provided that is was sold at the price indicated.

This listing is for a very scarce and unique prison & prisoner transport restraint THE OREGON BOOT. This particular boot has been in my collection since the 1970's. I obtained it from a prison employee and part-time collector in Rawlins Wyoming in the early 1970's who indicated that he "heard" that the boot was used up into the 1940's. The boot has been personalized for the Wyoming State Prison use and is Stamped on both sides WSP for Wyoming State Penitentiary. It also has the Leininger patent date stamped on both sides of May 16, '76. The prison manufactured the boot portion and is interesting to see the chain hole in the bottom of the platform evidently to chain one or more prisoners to the transport vehicle or cell. There is also two light chains around the top of the platform which I assume is to act as a keeper to the iron band which is loose on top of the platform? The boot top band weight does show some age wear and has a prison manufactured leather carry case. The wood handle "key" tool is original and it also has an additional all metal prison manufactured "key" that appears to work the best. Functional in all aspects and the original WSP stamping and prison customizing is very unique and definately adds to the boots history and interest. This boot is an example of the Leininger patent #177406 which was issued May 16, 1876 as an "improvement in shackles". One of a kind and very scarce.

The Oregon Boot, or Gardner Shackle as it was properly known, was patented July 3, 1866 by , then Oregon State Penitentiary Warden, J.C. Gardner. The shackles were manufactured at the Penitentiary by prisoners.

Each shackle consisted of a heavy iron band that locked around one ankle. This iron band was supported by another iron ring and braces which attached to the heel of a boot. These shackles weighed between 5 and 28 pounds apiece.

The Boot was placed on one leg only. This kept the inmate off balance and deprived him of agility.

At the time the Oregon Boot was invented, the territorial Prison and later the Penitentiary had an enormous escape problem. Mr. Gardner and subsequent wardens felt that the inmate population could not be adequately controlled without using the Gardner Shackle on each and every prisoner.

When Gardner was replaced as the warden, he obtained a court order preventing the use of the shackle without payment to him. The Oregon Legislature did authorize the payment of funds to Gardner that same year.

Wearing the shackle for extended periods of time caused extreme physical damage. Inmates would be bedridden for weeks at a time in extreme pain. The Gardner Shackle became known as a man-killer to the prisoners who wore them.

In 1878 Superintendent Chadwick discontinued the use of the shackle on a full time basis. Chadwick still used the shackle for disciplinary purposes. Virtually all counties and municipalities shackled their inmates when transporting them.

It isn´t known when the last time the Oregon Boot was used. As late as 1939 a prisoner was "ironed out" in Mill City, Oregon so that he could be transported to the Penitentiary.

As the seller noted, this padlock is in mint condition. So I am very pleased to have been the winner of this auction.

"MINT CONDITION" ANTIQUE SMOKEHOUSE Padlock with original key This Padlock is very unique in the way the key is used to open this lock. When you insert the key into the keyhold and turn the key, the key will then drop down to a second position which then requires you to again turn the key. When this sequence is followed the lock will open very easily. You are bidding on a very unusual Antique Smokehouse Padlock with the Original Key. This old antique padlock was found by my husband in an old steamer trunk that was locked and without a key from an antique shop. When my husband made a key for the old trunk and opened it the trunk was full of old clothes. Wrapped up in one of these articles of clothing was this Antique Smokehouse padlock and key. The lock is made of metal and brass while the key is metal. This lock is in MINT condition with NO RUST, CHIPS or DINGS. The key area on the lock (both front and back) are brass. On the front, sides and hasp of this lock are no markings. In the center of the front is a raised brass circle which forms a very unique key hole shape. On the back of this lock is again no markings except for a small brass circle which contains a very unusual shape or design engraved into it with the letter "C". The key also has no markings but the end of the key is slightly curved with one side going up and the other going down. This lock is in MINT condition and all working parts operate very smoothy. This lock is unknown as to origin except that it is very old judging by the clothing and again because of the way it way stored it is in MINT CONDITION. This lock measures 3 1/4" tall x 2 1/4" across and is 3/4" thick. The key measures 1 3/4" in length. The padlock with keys weights 5.6 ounces. Question & Answer: Q: Just a bit of information regarding this padlock. The design of letters on the back stand for Sargent & Co. This company has been in business since 1864. This padlock was made in the early days, probably from 1864 to the late 1890's. This padlock may be the finest example known to exist. TINY Horseshoe Dog Collar Padlock

Here is a neat miniature antique dog collar padlock. It measures a mere 3/4 inch long, 9/16 across, and 1/8 inch thick. It is a working padlock, though takes no key. The trick to opening is slide the key post sideways and pull the shackle. It is a very rare and hard to find miniature padlock likely dating to the late 19th century. Here is a neat miniature antique dog collar padlock. It measures 13/8 inch long, 1 1/32 across, and 3/16 inch thick. It is a working padlock, and comes with the original key. It is a very rare and hard to find miniature padlock dating to the late 19th century. Though the hasp is damaged it is in perfect working condition. The hasp has BARNES MFG CO, and PAT JUN- -- 79 (JUNE 1879) stamped into it. This was made by the BARNES MFG CO and was patented in 1879. Miniature Horseshoe Dog Collar Padlock

I was really surprised to come across this small horseshoe padlock because I was aware of the large one and the smaller one (which is the largest one on the photo below). And interestingly enough, there is an even smaller one.

S C Thomson Brass Padlock & Key Pat. 1853

I was one of the bidders on this lock that greatly underestimated what this padlock was going to go for. This is one reason I blog about these locks, to remember for next time, if there is a next time...

This is an antique brass padlock with original key . It is marked on the swiveling keyhole guard S C THOMSON & CO NEWARK N.J . On the arm of the lock it is marked PATENTED AUG 23 1853 .Use the ZOOM feature on my photos to view these marks . The lock is quite large . It measures 4 1/4" high x 3 3/8" wide x 1 1/4" thick .The lock weighs 1/2 an ounce under 2 pounds .The keys measures just over 2 1/2" long . It works very well . The lock and key are very well made and in very good condition with nice wear and a great patina . A nice old example being offered with no reserve. - eBay (11 March 2011)

Leg Irons - Rankin Style

This is a rare set of leg irons. However, it is in such bad condition that it did not find a buyer at the asking price. Look at it this way, once the prices start getting to $400 and higher, buyers that have that money are also willing to pay more for items in better condition.

Antique leg irons in the style of Rankin. We do not have the screw key, but they are unlocked (they close and will pull open). There are no markings. Overall length is 22 ½”. Cuffs are approximately 4” by 4 ½” by ¾” thick.

Leg irons have patina and marks consistent with use and age. Surface rust. Last link on one end of chain has break. Please see photos for condition. If you have any questions, or would like more photos, please ask before the last day of the auction. - eBay (3 Feb 2011)

W.C. Sinclair Padlock

This is one of the rarer ones...

I know next to nothing about this lock, but I do know it's rare and seldom seen. Its stamped W.C. Sinclair on the iron hasp. It is also stamped "patent" on the swinging door. This lock would have once had a trick to the left of the front face door, depressed by the bow of the key with an extra point. There is no key, but also the parts do not rattle inside. The lock is in the open position. The front door is somewhat loose. The back door moves to the side, I believe to allow the key to fully rotate in the lock. The measurements are 4in tall, 3in wide, and 1in thick. - eBay (24 Jan 2011)

Antique Star Padlock with Key

Here is a real neat Star padlock. This is the first one I have seen with a large shackle.

This Is a genuine working cast iron antique made in America by Star Lock Works, a company that went out of business in 1927. It has the large star cast around the key hole and the padlock is 4 inches tall overall. The iron case is 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 inches tall and the iron shackle adds another 2 inches in height. The hoop in the shackle is about 2 7/16" diameter which is about as wide as the case is. The Key is about 2 1/2 " long. This padlock still works with the shackle coming all the way out as well as the lock bottom showing a tight fit. Nice finish with no rust and a rich dark patina. This lock is from an era when people didn't lock their doors at night & padlocks weren't common at all. Here is someones chance to own a very rare, old, functioning padlock . British Colonial Jail Hand Irons c.1750 Ontario

This is a very interesting set of cuffs.

Antique Hand Irons - Old British Colonial Jail from Cayuga, Ontario, c. 1750

This is for a "pair" of antique hand irons, old British colonial jail irons from Cayuga, Ontario and are c.1750. These have the original key - square hole. The key fits in the hole and it opens by the screw being unscrewed and comes out, and opening the irons. The total length is about 3 7/8" from end to end closed. The width at the widest part is 2 3/4", again this is closed. These fit my wrist which is 6 1/4" circumference. The interior circumerence is about 6 1/2-6 3/4".

Note: the key is included as presented in the pictures.

This was collected by Mr. Roy Summers of Stoney Creek, Ontario. He collected this in Cayuga, Ontario in May 1978. My dad collected a lot of things from Mr. Summers, who had a great eye for things and collected a number of items that I've sold here.

Authentic Antique A. Rankin Handcuffs

Here is another set of Rankin handcuffs. Appears that it might have been repaired and maybe that is why there was a lack of interest.

Up for sale is a pair of authentic antique A. Rankin handcuffs.

These cuffs were patented in 1866. This is the "small size" version.

They have the patented "A. Rankin Phila" markings on them as well as a "Patent Dec 10th" marking.

The locks and springs of these cuffs are completely intact. When trying to pull apart in locked position one of the bows will come apart when locked. I believe that one side of these cuffs were repaired many many years ago on hinge, please look closely at the pictures.

These cuffs are in good shape.

They do come with the original key.

1876 CLARKE 10-Letter Combination Padlock

This is a very nice combination padlock. Unfortunately my limit was a little less than what at least one other person was willing to pay to get this padlock. So it seems that I will be waiting a little longer before I can get my hands on one.

Here we have a rare find! An early Clarke combination padlock. The only markings I see are on the back. 'Pat'd Feb.4, 1873, Reissued Feb.29, 1876'. These are Henry Clarke patents. Lock appears to be made of solid bronze. It is a 10-letter combination lock. I requires a 3 letter combination to open. It is in perfect working condition and I do have the combination for it.

The instructions to open the lock are as follows: You pull out the large ring in order to pull all the buttons in the OUT position. You then push the ring back in for easier access to the buttons. You then push IN the 3 buttons corresponding with the 3-letter combination. You then turn the ring to the right and the lock can then be opened.

This is an antique lock and it does have scratches and wear. Please look at pictures to see the condition. - eBay (12 Dec 2010)

Decker ChainLok REO Padlock

This lock is very interesting, simply because it looks cool.

What your bidding on is a very interesting rare old padlock. On the brass plate there is a wing designed logo which says "REO" in red. Across the top of the plate it says Decker Chainlok. It is stamped No S141182. The key is the original number B2427 which is also stamped on the brass key area of the lock. One of the loops is permanent and the other loop comes out with the turn of the key. The lock is in A-1 shape and works great. Romer Leg Cuffs

Nice vintage set of leg shackles for the collector from late 1800's. In working condition, nice smooth surface and patina, with key, shackles open nicely and close decidedly. Chubb handcuffs are not all that rare. A set like this I have not seen before. It is interesting.

This item is an original set from a now defunct airline. It contains all the items used by crew to restrain uncontrolled passengers, and keep them restrained until Police can meet the aircraft when on the ground.

Here is what appears to be a newer version of the US Registered Mail Padlock. This probably explains why this one went for much more than the older ones. Call it the price of having a complete set.

LARGE UNIQUE HOUDINI FENTON HANDCUFF

Houdini Fenton Handcuffs padlock At the Indianapolis Crossroads of America padlock convention several years ago a one-o-a-kind Ian McColl piece was displayed. This is that unique McColl creation. Here is the story of this unique piece;

The original lock was made about 1760 by William Fenton, a locksmith from Bradford, England. Only three were made. No one has knows the whereabouts of two of them, but one of them was used on a warehouse door. When the building was torn down in the 1800's the lock was removed by members of the Fenton family. It remained in the Fenton family when a descendant of Fenton’s challenged Houdini to open this lock. He added a wooden stock on top of the lock. The handwritten challenge to Houdini states in part; “Challenge to Mr. Houdini. Dear Sir, I have a patent lock with wood handcuffs attached, and if you will allow me to fasten you, I challenge you to pick the lock. The lock was made Wm Fenton, locksmith, Bradford, therefore a local one, and perhaps will give more interest than otherwise. If you will kindly accept theChallenge, I shall be pleased to handcuff you, at any time convenient to you. ….”
Houdini declined this challenge. Not once, but twice. He would not accept the challenge in 1910 and again in 1914 when performing in the area. After Houdini’s death it became known as the lock that beat Houdini, although Harry never accepted the challenge.

It is a simple warded lock, but has not one or two, but three compartments built within the lock. Drawings, sketches, and photos of the original padlock were made, and Ian faithfully reproduced the lock from that information complete with stocks. Up for auction is Ian’s one and only reproduction. Without instructions on how to open it one would take quite some time to even open it with the key. Instructions will be sent to the winning bidder. Since the original is owned by the family and for awhile was displayed in a museum (not sure if it’s still there or not), this is your only chance to own this important but almost unknown piece of Houdiniana. For Handcuff or Houdini collectors you won’t ever get a chance to acquire another one. Photos below show front, back, the key, and to show the immense size of this piece I've used another Ian McColl masterpiece for scale, his French Lettercuff. Notice the large size of this lock/handcuff compared to a normal sized handcuff. This is a unique chance to obtain a one-of-a-kind Houdini related piece. It may go to a padlock or lock collector, Houdini collector, or a handcuff collector. It operates beautifully, and is in perfect condition. I will include a photocopy of the Houdini Challenge, handwritten by a descendent of the original lock's maker William Fenton, and additional information on this famous declined Houdini challenge.

Rare Seal Padlock

Here is a real interesting seal padlock. I am not sure the role of the lever. The lock front will only open when the shackle is open as you can see that on the top inside a part of the door locks with the shackle when it is closed.The dimples hold some piece of paper and there is a door to protect the paper seal. In all an interesting design.

Miniature Copper Penny Trick Padlock

I would not exactly classify this as a lock. It is nice though.

Here is a very hard to find antique miniature Copper Wheat penny trick padlock. Condition is excellent. It was made from two copper pennys, one is dated 1937. The entire lock measures only 1 inch long, 5/16 inch thick, and 3/4 inch across. Not much of a trick though still a very unusual padlock perfect for display. You push the spring loaded button and the shackle pops up and turns 45 degrees.

Another set - Bean Giant handcuff

Here is yet another set of Bean Giant handcuffs. Seems a bit odd that all these sets are coming up for auction all of a sudden. As a result it seems that prices have taken a hit. I know when I got my first set, I did not know when the next set would come around. Then the next three sets went for more than what I paid for mine. And now, I have a second set which I paid half the price of the first. On the good side, as long as your buying a deal is a deal...

Please ask any question before you bid and I will do my best to answer them. I have been collecting for nearly 20 years and am pretty much not interested anymore and phasing out the collection for new interests. This is sold as a collectible, and not intended for law enforcement use. I am not the original owner, so I can't claim it came from a smoke free home, although I myself do not smoke.
This is the Bean Giant handcuff, which made its appearance in the 1880s and may have been manufactured into the early 1900s. It is an original and NOT a reproduction. It is a single locking handcuff with a solid body design, there is a key way at the center of the cuff body which makes opening it when on your wrists very difficult. The cuff is bare metal, with traces of plating at the hinges. Both cuffs unlock, but the reset button on one side doesn't work, so that side automatically re-locks when the bow arm is released. The other button works fine, so that side stays unlocked when opened and resets by pushing the button. The cuff is marked Pat. Pend (not pat number!) on the bow arm, not the body and is out of view when the cuff is closed. There is a '6' stamped on the back of the cuff, no idea what it refers to. Included is a working single bit key that came with the cuff when I bought it.
DISCLAIMER: This cuff was NOT owned by Houdini at any time. They guy I bought it from back in the 90s is knowledgeable enough that if it was ever owned or handled by Houdini I would have had to pay a lot more for it. There is no association of any note with this cuff.
